Semen

Wenmar Beef Shorthorns are now able to offer, direct from centres in the UK, beef shorthorn semen from North America, Canada and Australia. Over the last few years, we have visited farms and exhibitions in Canada and North America selecting genetics which we feel will assist in enhancing our shorthorn breed here in the UK.

DRS Super Mario 42E blends the very best of genetics from east and west Canada, his sire from Crooked Post Shorthorns in Alberta, the renowned Crooked Post Stockman 4Z and his dam originated from the great Picture Perfect family at Shadybrook Farms in Quebec. The semen was imported in partnership with the Irish Shorthorn Society whose members have used it extensively with great results. Take-up here in the UK has been much slower even though the benefits of using it are now well proven. This presents an opportunity for breeders to use the semen without concerns. Super Mario carries a single trait of Myostatin E226X, and is tested clear of genetic defects DS, PHA and TH.

Tobias has now proved himself here in the UK as a very good herd sire. He has been used by some of the 'know better' herds on this side of the Atlantic. He has a proven Australian sire Yamburgan Tobermorey F90 who has an excellent set of Australian EBV’s. His dam Crooked Post Minnie 23Z from the renowned Minnie female line at Crooked Post shorthorns in Alberta also has an excellent set of Canadian EPD’s to compliment those of Tobias’s sire. Tobias carries a single trait of Myostatin E226X, and is tested clear of genetic defects DS, PHA and TH.

Qantas is 100% Australian breeding from two of the renowned Australian herds Marellan and Royalla. These two herds offer immense depth in proven genetics gained over many years of successful Shorthorn breeding. We watched Qantas develop at Shadybrook from seeing him first as a calf through to him being their senior herd sire. We decided to import his semen after viewing his progeny. Qantas has zero Myostan and is tested clear of genetic defects DS, PHA and TH. Whenever we viewed him he was a quiet well behaved bull and certainly put shape and style into his progeny. He had an excellent show career being awarded Junior Champion bull as a calf at the Toronto Winter Fair, and then went onto prove himself as an excellent herd sire.

Drover is a direct descendant from the great Crooked Post Stockman 4Z, who was not eligible for semen collection for importing into the UK and Europe. We liked everything about Stockman including temperament, size, structure, fleshing and locomotion. Drover although only a young bull on our first viewing also exhibited early signs of his sires attributes. His sire certainly put his stamp on his progeny. The benefit we also saw so in Drover was his mother, Crooked Post Lass 44W. She had great locomotion, a very good top line with depth and a great udder, she was also from a very strong female line with lots of Drover’s siblings being retained in the herd.

Beefeater was used extensively in our herd and also by Jack and Grace Ramsay at Milerston. We bred his mother was from one of best female lines when we were based on the Isle of Man. His sire was interbreed beef champion at the RHS, East of England and GYS shows all in the same year! Beefeater was a large easy fleshing deep bull with a great back end, he had zero myostatin and put his stamp across all of his progeny. Beefeater had a great temperament, his semen will continue to be used within our herd for years to come.

Hercules Hercules, we first spotted as a yearling at the Royal Highland Show and then managed to purchase him at the following spring bull sales in Stirling. He always had tremendous presence and style coupled with great locomotion. He was a quiet well mannered bull and always easy to handle. He has zero Myostatin and is polled. Hercules moved on from us after a couple of seasons to another pedigree herd in Ireland, leaving us progeny similar to himself. We plan to use his semen again selectively on some of our solid red cows to reintroduce some colour into those female lines.
